Godchaux was a French painter, born in 1835, who painted port scenes along the Normandy coastline as well as beaches with fishermen and boats. His mountainous landscapes are of the Pyrenees and the Savoy mountains. Alfred liked big skies and panoramic views in his paintings that are traditional in design. Alfred signed his paintings in a very small and finely handled style sometimes etched into the drying paint so finely, a magnifying glass was required to see them. Emil Godchaux (1860- 1938) is thought to be his son as he worked in a similar style to his father painting similar sized subjects and places in a less defined approach, however, Emil signed his work in a larger, easy to read signature.

This set of 3 paintings from the French countryside is titled ‘From the mountains to the valley, to the sea’ and depicts a spectacular view of each, with very ornate but delicate matching gilt wood frames. Each painting measures 53 in – 134.6 cm wide, 27 ¾ in – 70.5 cm high and 3 in – 7.5 cm deep at the deepest point of the frame.

The price for this superb trio is £9,250.00.
