A very striking oil on canvas titled ‘Land Storm’ by the circle of Dutch artist Philip James de Loutherbourg. Loutherbourg was born in Strasbourg, in 1740, and by 1770, was an established painter in France. He was a painter to the king, a member of the French Royal Academy and of the Academy of Marseilles. Philip was preoccupied with the recreation of dramatic naturalistic light effects and maritime scenes. He began to exhibit in the Royal Academy in 1772, with the first of his 151 works, and continued to do so until his death in Chiswick. Examples of his work can be seen at the National Maritime Museum, Tate Gallery in London and Metropolitan Museum in New York, among others.

The painting here depicts a group of men in a boat and along the shoreline with the storm waters rising in the distance. It measures 43 in – 109.2 cm wide, 33 ½ in – 85 cm high and 2 ½ in – 6.4 cm in overall depth.

This painting is priced at £4,500.00.
